 | When a new sodium hypochlorite dosing plant was required at the Whitbourne Water Treatment Works, peristaltic pumps from Watson-Marlow Bredel were chosen because they are self-priming, unaffected by gassing or crystals, and are resistant to chemical corrosion. Steve Williams, assistant engineer, was tasked to replace a system that required sodium hypochlorite to be diluted to 1% and caused salt settlement in the feed lines and storage tanks. "We decided to avoid using a gas chlorination system because of the danger of storing gas on-site," said Williams. "Sodium hypochlorite at 14 to 15% was selected because at this solution salt settlement is less likely, but it is more likely to cause gassing problems, so we chose four Watson-Marlow Bredel 504U/RL pumps, which, unlike other types of pumps, prevent gas build up in the pumphead." Two of the 504U/RL pumps dose hypochlorite into the pre-filter channel, and two more dose into post-filter main. In each case one pump is on a duty/standby basis. | |
